Shirley Ann Mayes, 82, was born in Hopkinsville, KY to James Thomas and Zettie (Shepherd) Mayes, on June 4, 1936. A resident of Alexandria, VA for the past 30 years, she lost her battle with cancer November 23, 2018. Shirley attended Hopkinsville High School before marrying and moving to Chicago where she enjoyed life with her husband and their four sons. She later remarried, had two more sons, and moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts where she attended Northeastern University at Boston, earning an Associates Degree as a medical laboratory technician. She next lived in Fayetteville, NC, but returned to Hopkinsville to help care for her father and mother before their deaths. During this period, Shirley continued her interest in medicine by working at Jennie Stuart Memorial Hospital.
Shirley was a loving daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Mel and Bette (Mayes) Cook; six sons, James Leroy and Linda (Gatlin) Tauberschmidt of Jonesboro, AR, Robert Tauberschmidt of Chicago, IL, Gerald Tauberschmidt of Chicago, IL, David Tauberschmidt of Clarksville, TN, Patrick Douglas Baillargeon of McLean, VA, and Christopher Antonio Baillargeon of Lakewood, WA; plus six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her father and mother, James and Zettie (Shepherd) Mayes; four sisters, Elizabeth “Billie” Taveira, Marjorie Nelson, Peggy Oryall, and Edith Mae Fletcher; and two husbands, Gerald Tauberschmidt and Joseph Douglas Baillargeon.
Shirley’s gift in life was this beautiful family. While living in many cities around the country, Shirley always wanted to return to her hometown of Hopkinsville. Her family is bringing her remains home for burial at Riverside Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3. Please join the family in celebrating her life at a gathering at 12:30 p.m. that date at the Best Western Hotel, 4101 Fort Campbell Blvd.
